How to Set Up Your First Fish Tank

A beginner-friendly guide to preparing a healthy freshwater home for ornamental fish.

Choose a suitable tank and place it on a strong, level surface away from direct sunlight. Rinse the tank, stones and decorations with clean water only—do not use soap.

Install the filter and air system, add treated water, and make sure chlorine is removed before fish are introduced. Allow the setup to run and stabilize rather than adding many fish immediately.

Add fish gradually and avoid overcrowding. Feed small amounts, remove uneaten food, and keep a regular water-change routine. A stable, clean environment is more important than making frequent large changes.
